How is Paper Recycled?
Video of the Papermaking Process
The mill in the video is actually a fine paper mill (i.e., it makes magazine paper) so it doesn't manufacture the type of paper we would generally offer.  But the manufacturing process is very similar to the mills that make Kraft paper, for example.

Useful Formulas

To determine roll weight for Kraft, Butcher, and Newsprint

Formula: Length (inches) x 12 x Basis Weight ÷ 432 x Lineal Feet = Weight per roll

Example: Natural Kraft; 36” Roll; 30# Basis Weight; 1625 lineal feet

  36” x 12” x 30# ÷ 432 x 1625’ = 48.75 lbs.

To determine weight per 1000 sheets for Kraft, Newsprint, Butcher, and Tissue

Formula:
Length (inches) x Width (inches) x Basis Weight ÷ 432 = Weight per 1,000 Sheets

Example: 24” x 36”; 50# Basis Weight

24” x 36” x 50# ÷ 432 = 100 lbs. per 1,000 Sheets

To determine weight of a 500 sheet ream of non standard sheet size

Formula:
L  x  W (in inches) x Basis Weight  =  Ream Weight in Pounds
864
Example: 28” x 62” sheet, 30# Basis Weight
28” x 62” x 30#  =  60.3 Ream Weight (3000 square feet)

                                                    864

To determine weight per 1000 sheets for Utility Chipboard, Wallboard, 620 News etc.

Formula: Length x Width x 375 ÷ 1000 = M-Weight.

Example: 40” x 48”

40” x 48” x 375 ÷ 1000 = 720 lbs. per thousand sheets

Basis Weight (for Kraft)

500 sheets 24” x 36” (3000 square feet) = Basis Weight.

Example:
500 24” x 36” sheets 40# basis weight will weight 40 lbs.
